The character of the designation of numbers in the Roman system is in many ways similar to the Greek numeration in its first version. Moreover, there are special designations for the numbers 1 (I), 10 (X), 100 (C), 1000 (M), as well as for 5 (V), 50 (L), 500 (D).
All of the above signs are recognized as nodal. It is with their use that it will be possible to write down any multi-digit number. Before acquiring the appearance of numbers familiar to our contemporaries, the Roman analogues underwent more than one change. But if you look at them more closely, you can see the similarity of the sign "I" with a stick, "V" - with an open hand, "X" - with two crossed hands.
There is another opinion, which consists in the fact that the numbers from 1 to 9 will not be difficult to depict in the form of the required number of vertical sticks. But to write down the number 10, the tenth of them was used to cross out the previous 9 and connect them into a dozen. In order to avoid an excessive number of these sticks, they began to use the X sign, i.e., they simply crossed out one stick. The number V (5) was obtained by dividing the X sign in half.
But when it came to writing the number 100, the stick was crossed out twice or a circle with a dot inside was used. And, of course, half of this sign was used to denote the number 50.
In addition, the designations C and M, corresponding to the numbers 100 and 1000, are associated with the names of hundreds and thousands. For example: a mile (M) is a path of a thousand steps.
Note the method of facilitating the memorization of numbers in the form of the Latin alphabet, following in descending order: We Give Juicy Lemons, Hvatit Vsem Ix (M - 1000, 500 - D, C - 100, L - 50, V - 5, I - 1).
I would also add that the ancient Romans wrote down the required number in such a way that the sum of the symbols would make up the given number. For example: 8 was written as VIII, and 382 looked like CCCLXII, I learned this when I read the article History of numerals. Moreover, the numbers of a greater value are placed in front, and then follow those of a lesser value. But in the case when a smaller number is written in front of a larger one, the result is oriented towards subtraction.
