Why is Hera often depicted as jealous in myths?

I have read several Greek myths where Hera is portrayed as very jealous and vengeful, especially towards Zeus' lovers and children. Why was she portrayed this way? Was it just a way to explain her human emotions or did it have a deeper meaning in Greek culture?
